Five reasons your child should learn performing arts

This week Noodle Performance Arts is celebrating its fourth birthday.

We held our first performing arts class back in September 2011 for a small group of children at Beighton Lifestyle Centre and since then things have gone from strength to strength. We now teach performing arts and dance classes in venues all over Sheffield and Rotherham and we’ve loved seeing the children we teach learn new skills and grow in confidence.

As we mark four years of teaching children to sing, dance and act, we’ve put together a list of five ways in which young people benefit from taking part in performing arts.

  1. Better communication skills

Getting involved in performing arts boosts children’s language skills and helps them develop a wider vocabulary. By learning lines for a scene, they may use words they haven’t come across before and performing arts is a great way of getting used to speaking in a group. We’ll never get tired of seeing children go from being shy and nervous to being confident and relaxed in front of an audience.

  1. Creativity and imagination

Children are naturally creative and performing arts helps them use their imagination and think about things in new and interesting ways. By acting out different situations, youngsters can make sense of difficult emotions like sadness and anger in a safe and positive way. And both singing and dancing allows children to express their feelings instead of bottling them up.

  1. Working as a team

Whether it is singing a song with their classmates, learning the steps to a dance routine or rehearsing a scene, performing arts gets children working together. Putting on a show or simply taking part in a fun exercise during class is a fantastic way for children to practice working as a team and learn the importance of collaboration.

  1. Perseverance

Learning new skills can be tricky and sometimes it can take a while to get things right. By taking part in performance arts, children learn that practice makes perfect and that it is okay if they can’t do something straight away. Rehearsals are an important part of dance, drama and singing and help youngsters learn that determination, perseverance and patience are importance ingredients to achieving success.

  1. Confidence and self esteem

Taking part in performing arts is a great way for children to discover talents they didn’t realise they had, make new friends and grow in self-confidence. All this is a brilliant way of boosting their self-esteem. Our Noodle teachers will work with quiet children, helping them to gain confidence in their abilities and gently encouraging them to find their voice.
